For the first time in the 51 year history of Harvard Stadium, graduate school students will be unable to purchase tickets to the Yale game through the Department of Athletics, Frank O. Lunden, H.A.A. Ticket Manager, reported yesterday.
He further warned that undergraduates who failed to apply for tickets by last Monday, can not buy extra tickets now with their guaranteed "free" seat. "We are oversubscribed and will accept no more applications from anyone," he stated.
Graduate school students, who are third in line of preference behind undergraduates and alumni were to have filed for Yale game seats today. "I don't know what I can say to them when they come in, except that I'm sorry," Lunden explained. "Their only hope is to keep checking with us next week in case something breaks."
Prospect that Yale might return some of its 14,900 seat allotment out of the total 37,900 seats in the Stadium appeared very slight. "I'm going to keep following it up, but Yale has indicated I should not expect any back," Lunden said.
There is no chance temporary stands will be erected in the open end of the horse-shoe, Thomas D. Bolles, Director of Athletics, said yesterday that it was too late to undertake the project now.
Undergraduate applications have been so extensive that the Department of Athletics will not return tickets to undergraduates until Monday, instead of today as was planned.
Juniors in End Zons
"We are already going into the graduate section and into section 37 in the end zone to seat the junior class," Lunden reported. Sophomore and freshman seats will be along the track and high in the colonnades. Most alumni, unless Varsity Club members, will find themselves in the oval.
The senior class has been assigned 1,900 seats, 1,800 to juniors, 1,500 to sophomores, and 1,324 to freshmen. This compares with only 1,386 to seniors at the Dartmouth game.
"I don't know where we will put undergraduates who have not yet applied for seats," Lunden stated. "We have to give them something, as they have already paid for their tickets. I just hope all undergraduates have already applied."
"We've always been able to allot at least two sections to graduate students in the past," Lunden explained. "But the combination of free undergraduate tickets and the quota to Yale make seating graduate students virtually impossible."
Last year there were only a few hundred disappointed applicants, Bolles said.
This is the second time the Yale game has been in the Stadium since the steel stands were removed.
