The varsity football team, which has spent many unhappy Saturdays struggling with little knows opponents, may be is for more embarrassment today. Led by quarterback Bill Frederick and halfback Erland Ahlberg, the Ohio University squad that comes to the Stadium this afternoon boasts a wall balanced T-formation attack.
Frederick, an able passer, has hit on 19 out of 34 attempts for the Bobcats this season. He could give the Crimson's weak pass-defense plenty of action today.
The biggest problem for Ohio all year has been finding receivers for Frederick's passes. Hurt by the graduation of all conference end Lee Sawchuck, the team received further damage when regulars Jack Watkins and Jim Krager were seriously injured early in the season. Jack Vair, the team's number three end, suffered a pinched nerve in last week's loss to Miami of Ohio, but will probably start today. If he doesn't Jim Gawronaki, a sophomore, will replace him. Junior Dave Lundberg, a 180 pound veteran of last year's team, is scheduled to play at right end.
Strong Rushing Attack
The Bobcats' real strength lies in their ground attack, however.
Leading ground gainer and high scorer on the squad is Ahlberg, a fast 158 pound halfback, who has averaged eight yards per carry. Sophomore Roger Thomas is the other starting halfback. Ted Jackson, the team's 211 pound fullback, has seen considerable action on line plunges and off-tackle plays.
Line May Decide
With both Ohio and the varsity boasting strong running attacks, the comparative play of the two lines may decide the game. John Schwab, the right guard, is the squad's captain and a member of last year's all-Mid-America conference team. Veterans Dick Spellmey (209) Pounds) and Stan Maschino (190) flank Schwab at center and right tackle. At left tackle will be senior Ron Weaver (208), while Bob Ripple, a 188 pound sophomore, is slated to start at left guard.
