Unbeaten '58 Soccer Team Faces Tufts

Captain-elect Don Beaver leads an unbeaten freshman soccer team into its fourth game at 3:45 p.m. today, when the Yardlings oppose Tufts on the Business School Field. Beaver, a left fullback who attended Deerfield Academy, plays the aggressive, passing type of game that Coach Poley Guyda has been advocating.

Guyda's emphasis on the Scotch game, where the short, accurate pass is stressed, has paid off in a team that has scored 14 goals and held the opposition to one so far.

Center forward Chad Tubman has provided the scoring punch, getting seven goals or half the team's total. The Governor Dummer graduate (whose 21 goals set a new school record last year) is fast and has good control.

The starting insides are Henry Cortesi and Jim Shue, both good playmakers. Tom Burnheim, who is very aggressive, and Gonzalo Ospena, are the second pair of insides. Bob Magowan and Barry Bandler also play this position; Magowan scored once against M.I.T.

Ken McIntosh and Karim Khan, the first string wings, have accounted for five goals so far. The versatile McIntosh, who plays both wings equally well, scored his three goals in the M.I.T. game, and Khan got the initial goals against Exeter and Tech. Alternate wing Nick Beilenson also tallied against M.I.T.

Comparable to 1952

Guyda considers the freshman defense comparable to that of 1952, a team that held its opposition to two goals. Louis Felsteiner, at left half, is the key man, being a very consistent playmaker. Center half Tony Overschall's "methodical play" has given him the edge over Charles Malonee. Bill Hartmann holds down the other halfback position. The alternates are Dan Singer and John Edger.

Besides Beaver, the other regular fullback is Peter Moloy. Moloy's ability to clear the ball places him above Sam Frieder. Rugged (195 pounds) Peter Payne is being used as a utility man.

Competition is probably keenest for the starting goalie position. There is not much difference between Arnold Sengal and Don McNeil. Sengal started the first two games, but was unable to play against Dartmouth, and McNeil took over. Both have turned in creditable performances.

Barring injuries, this Yardling team could develop into one of Guyda's finest.
