Crimson hockey coach Cooney Weiland officially opened the 1954-55 season last night when he greeted some 65 varsity and freshman candidates in the Varsity Club.
Weiland was optimistic about the future of varsity hockey, saying that "we are attracting better and better players all the time." He also said that the Donald C. Watson rink will be "the best on the North American continent when the roof is completed. All we need is a good team to go with it," he added.
500 Sticks Broken
The brief introductory talk was spiced with warnings to the candidates to keep in good academic standing, stay in condition, and get plenty of sleep.
Freshman coach John White asked the players to use their sticks "as hockey sticks, not war clubs." He estimated that varsity and freshman players broke approximately 600 sticks last season.
Varsity practice will start November 15 on the rink, weather permitting.
