And it was his elusive age that finally caught up with him.

The Baltimore Orioles released him outright so he might possibly make a deal for himself.

"Satch," because of his age, just couldn't fit into the plans to build up the Orioles," said Art Ehlers, the Baltimore general manager.

Nobody seems sure how old the stringbean Negro is. Satchmo himself has always been vague about the date of his birth in Mobile, Ala. The best guess is 50.

Tony Trabort, America's No. 1 tennis player, was humiliated yesterday by the balding John Bromwhich in the second round of the Australian national championships. Australian tennis writers immediately forecast an investigation by the Lawn Tennis Assoc. of Australia.

Bromwich, the 35-year-old, two-fisted racquet swinger and former Aussie and Davis Cup star, was down 1-6, 1-6 only to come back for a 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 victory in the last three sets.
