A fire of undetermined origin broke out in Weld South shortly past midnight last night.
Arriving within minutes of the blase, the Cambridge Fire Department was able to confine the fire to two rooms, Weld South 19 and 20, preventing possible destruction of the whole building.
The rooms themselves were almost a total loss and water damage to the rest of the building was extensive.
At 12:15 a.m., Leland W. T. Cummings '57, returning to his room, Weld 19, found smoke coming from a closet where suitcases and old clothes were kept. He tried to douse it with waste baskets of water, but the flames leaped to the ceiling and he and his roommate, Joseph T. "Terry" Leverich '57 were the occupants of room 20.
Over 250 spectators withstood the subfreezing temperatures to watch the firemen in action.
