Five Finally Beats Yale Jinx, 66-54

Dennis, Condon Shine In Second Ivy Victory

In a tight game at the I.A.B. Saturday night, Bill Dennis and Ed Condon led an underdog varsity basketball team to its first victory over Yale since they were freshmen. Dennis tallied 20 of the Crimson's 66 points, while Condon was largely responsible for holding a cold Yale team to 54.

Dennis hitting on eight or 17 field goal attempts, was hot from the corner; Condon, allowing the speedy Ellsworth Morgan a mere eight points, was great all over the court. And the other half of Yale's deadly one-two punch, Captain Spence Schnaitter, was hold to but six points by tech combination of a bad ankle and the tight guarding of Dick Manning.

With these big Eli guns silenced, Frank Demcak, usually a reserve, kept the visitors in the ball game with 18 points, and as a matter of fact, he kept them in contention for much longer than the Crimson could have wished.

Crimson surges

Yale was behind only 40 to 39 with eight minutes left, but then a seven-point splurge by the varsity in the next two-and-a-half minutes ended Eli hopes. The visitors couldn't put in a field goal for the first six minutes of the crucial final quarter.

For that matter, Coach Howard Hobson's team had trouble with its shooting all night. It controlled both backboards for much of the game and moved the ball well, but hit on only 22 percent of 67 attempts. Coldness on the strange court was partially to blame, as were Norm Shepard's shifting defenses which were all over Yale very time it tried to shoot.

Although the Crimson could get but 59 shots against the Eli zone, it made good on 32 percent, and that made the difference,. Backing up Dennis, Harry Sacks scored 16 points, and Roger Bulger and Captain Ed Kirnsky each added eight. Ten of Sacks' total came on free throws, and the junior appears certain of breaking his own E.I.B.L. season record in this department. He scored 102 last year and now has 50 in five games with nine more contests to go.

Yale Loses Lead

All of Bulger's eight points were scored is the varsity's big fourth quarter when it tallied 28 points. The game stood at 13 to 13 after the first period, and the Crimson then moved to a two-point lead at the end of the half, 26 to 24.

The varsity made no headway in the third quarter, which ended 38 to 36, in favor of the Crimson. Yale hold its last lead of the evening, 31 to 30, early in that period when Demcak sand three straight field goals. The third quarter also say Coach, Shepard's first substitution of he game--Bulger for Condon in the eighth minute.

Shortly thereafter the Crimson exploded to clinch the game, and Yale was unable to keep the varsity from building up its margin. When the final buzzer sounded, the happy, near-capacity crowd rose to sing. "Ten Thousand Men of Harvard Want Blodnick Today."

The victory was the eighth of the season against five defeats for the Crimson, which closes the fall semester in fourth place in the E.I.B.L. The loss dropped Yale into a three-way tie for sixth in league competition.

The varsity resumes play Wednesday, February 3 at the I.A.B. against Amherst.

In the preliminary game, the Yardlings won their seventh straight, 96 to 58, handing Dean Academy its first defeat in 35 contests.
