High Courts Sanction Teacher Loyalty Oaths

Extend Fineberg Law

The hitch in New York's Fineberg law that held up its application to colleges was ironed out by the state legislature this year. On April 15, Governor Dewey signed into law a bill extending its provisions to City College of New York, Brooklyn, Hunter, and Queens colleges, as well as the plethora of state teachers colleges in Americas most populous state.

The Law, which instructs the New York Board of Regents to make a list of subversive organizations, membership in which is prime facts evidence of unfitness to teach, was upheld by the Supreme Court last year.

The Regents are presently conferring on whether to call the Communist party a subversive organization.
