Group Study Set For Eliot Juniors

Eliot House is reinstituting a mass tutorial this spring. The Non-Honors Juniors in Economics, Government, and History will combine to discuss contemporary Russia, and the notion of present Russian imperialism. The main question will be, "Is this imperialism Marxian or Russian?"

The large meeting will take place on April 22.

There will be two sessions of the tutorial. At the first, the Juniors will discuss Russia in the light of their field of concentration. These will be the regular small meetings. At the second meeting, or the combined session, the students will read their papers, written for the previous meeting. The papers will deal with Russia from each different field.

All three fields are assigned common reading in Sir John Maynard's "Russia in Flux," a book dealing with all phases of modern Russia.

Alexander Gershenkron, professor of Economics, Michael Karpovich, professor of History, Adam Ulam, assistant professor of Government, and Alex Inkeles, senior research fellow of the Russian Research Center, will lead the discussion at the large session.

John H. Finley, Jr. '25, Master of Eliot House, said the mass tutorial was tried in all the Houses in the thirties, but was discontinued because of a lack of funds. He added that he did not know of any of the other Houses trying the system this year.
