Med School Janitors Will Decide on Union

Janitors at the Medical School will have to choose between the independent Harvard University Employees Representative Association and the International AFL within the next ten days, the Massachusetts Labor Relations Commission announced last night.

The election will determine which union will represent medical school janitors in negotiations with the University. It will follow preliminary hearings this week.

Earlier in the afternoon Matthew L. McGrath, New England director of the AFL affiliated Building Service Employees International Association, reported he would file petitions today for elections among maids and janitors at both the graduate schools and the college.

But the Labor Relations Commission said he had petitioned only for the power plant at the Medical School. There has been no petition for maid elections, the commission added.

By state law, at least 30 percent of employees voting must have petitioned for an election.
