Adenauer Offers Two Scholarships

Two scholarships for a year's study at German universities have been offered to Harvard by Conrad Adenauer, Chancellor of the West German Republic. Each provides for tuition, transportation, and 250 German marks per month, equivalent to about $75 in American money.

The Chancellor, who spoke before a large group of the faculty and German exchange students at University Hall last Friday, proposed the new scholarships to express his appreciation for the aid American institutions have given German students.

Departing from his prepared speech on world affairs to make the scholarship offer. Adenauer explained his gratitude to America.

"In Germany," said Adenauer, "we experienced the effects of a totalitarian state and we know that it cannot tolerate universities. We have learned the value of freedom and we thank you here for giving German refugee students a place of refuge in which to carry on their work."
