More students are applying for admission to Radcliffe this year than at any other time in the past few years, President Wilbur K. Jordan disclosed this week.
At the same time the Class of '57 will be a smaller one that the present freshman class, Jordan said. There are 280 students in the Class of '56, but the freshmen next year will number only 262. Competition among applicants therefore, will be keener than last year.
For the past several years Jordan has wanted to reduce Radcliffe's total enrollment to 1,000 students. Slightly more than 1,000 are presently enrolled. It is felt that 262 constitutes a "more normal freshman class."
The increasing number of applications this year reflects a general trend which has continued for the past ten years, Jordan indicated.
The rise in the number of applications was probably caused partly by increased efforts in the past two years to publicize Radcliffe throughout the country.
