Medical School Device May Eliminate Heart Stoppage in Surgery

A new electrical stimulating technique may eliminate sudden death caused by the accidental stoppage of a healthy heart during an operation, Paul M. Zoll '32, associate in Medicine, said Saturday.

Zoll and his associates at the Medical School said their instrument has already saved the lives of three people whose heart had completely stopped beating.

"We feel that with such improvements in the technique which we are now exploring, it may eventually be possible to eliminate sudden eath resulting from accidental heart stoppages due to accidents during surgery or the application of anesthesia," said Zoll.
