Draft commitments will not prevent students from securing jobs immediately after graduation this year, Louis L. Newby, director of student placement, stated yesterday.
Newby announced that many companies are eager to sign up graduates, even for two month training periods, before they leave for the armed services.
Students will learn of the opportunities available through a series of career placement conferences beginning Tuesday, February 17, at the Houses and in the Union. Subjects included in the schedule for this year include Writing and Journalism, Law, Finance, Scholarship and Research, Small Business, Medical Science, Government, Marketing and Merchandising, Radio, Television and Movies.
Newby said, "The purpose of these conferences is to open the minds of students still undecided on their future occupation to the many opportunities available in business and the professions." Government was the most popular conference last year, with over 400 attending. The conference on Writing and Journalism will open the series this year at the Leverett House dining hall on February 17.
Newby, who is interviewing over half of the senior class at present, urged students to consult the Office of Student Placement's vocational library before coming to the conferences.
