Swiss cellist August Wenzinger has been named Horatio Appleton lamp Visiting Lecturer in Music for the spring term. Randall Thompson '20, chairman of the Department of Music announced yesterday. He fills a post when has not been occupied since 1947.
Thompson said that Wenzinger will arrive from Europe Friday. The Swiss musician will teach Music 108, the History of Musical Performances.
Wenzinger comes from the Schola Cantorum of Bale. Switzerland which he helped to found several years age. He is at present sole cellist for the Hale Symphony Orchestra and also heads a concert group of faculty members at Sale.
The lecture laboratory course will study ancient instruments and music using for the first time a "chest of viols," exact copies of ancient instruments. Wenzinger will demonstrate on his own very famous Steiner viola.
The department will present three or form concerts at Sanders Theatre during Wenzinger a stay here. Thompson stated Wenzinger will present music from the Renaissance, Rarooue and Classical periods assisted in other musicians and perhaps some students.
