Andover Academy and warm weather figured heavily in the freshman sports schedule over the Washington's Birthday weekend.
A powerful Andover swimming team upset a previously undefeated Yardling squad, 43 to 32, in the winners' pool. Only bright spot for the Crimson came after Captain Dave Hawkins' record-breaking swim in the 150 yard medley free style, when his 1:36.6 time topped both varsity (1:38.7 sec.) and freshman (1:43.3 sec.) records.
Unseasonably warm rains washed out the '56 hockey game against the Blue, while no snow forced the Yardling skiers to cancel their meet with Putney School.
The freshmen made up for their earlier losses by dropping the Andover wrestling team, 27 to 3, and shaving by the basketball team, 59 to 58.
The basketball victory came only after Andover failed to make two last-minute foul shots which would have tied the game.
The five dropped a Washington's Birthday game against Nichols Junior College, 65 to 78, for their second loss of the season. John Nolan scored 15 points.
The wrestling team missed a shutout over the Blue by virtue of a 4 to 0 decision against Yardling wrestler Alan Culbert at 177 pounds.
The freshman squash team salvaged but one win against a highly-rated Exeter team, as they lost at Hemenway Saturday afternoon, 4 to 1.
