Last Try for 'Cliffe Cheer Unit Quashed

Radcliffe cheerleaders will not appear at varsity or freshman basketball games this year. This, despite the more than 1000 students who signed a petition to have the Student Council reconsider its adverse stand.

John W. Hurst '56, sponsor of the petition, last night said he was completely discouraged and would not press the issue further. Whereas previously Dean Watson had said a change would be made if there was enough student support, yesterday he indicated coed cheerers would not be sanctioned no matter how many were behind it, according to Hurst.

Too Little Time

Time, too, was running out on Hurst. With the next Council meeting scheduled for March 2, there would not have been time enough to hold a College-wide referendum and present it to the Faculty Committee on Athletics before the end of the basketball season on March 7.

Paul D. Sheats '54, president of the Council, last night said that evidently "the issue still seems to be open--in the future, at least." He suggested that since this interest has been stimulated, some coed cheerleading scheme may possibly be adopted next year.

Sheats said the Council made its decision thinking students were against mixed cheerleading. "In general we are corroborated here," he felt, regarding the petition.

Meanwhile the Council plans to air its views on this issue at 6:15 this evening over WHRB. Hurst is scheduled to argue for the plan; David P. Bicks '55, against.
