Radcliffe Council Asks for Support Of New Tax Bill

Radcliffe's Student Council yesterday approved a motion to pressure for the passage of the Multner Bill. This is the bill that would allow taxpayers to take deductions on expenditures for the education of their dependents at a college or university.

Simmons College undergraduates have also campaigned actively for this bill.

The Council plans to buy about 700 postcards and distribute them to "Cliffe students who will send the cards to their senators and state representatives, urging a vote in favor of the bill.

Expected to Pass in January

Now under study by the Hose Ways and Means Committee, the Multer Bill is expected to pass in January. It provides for "a deduction for income tax purposes of certain expenses incurred by the taxpayer for the education of a dependent."

Under present laws, if a student earns more than $599 while employed during the summer, he or she automatically ceases to be a dependent. A bill to rectify this situation is also under study by Congress this year.

The motion was passed in the Council by a vote of 21 to 2, with three members abstaining from a vote on the question.
