Defense again drew emphasis at varsity football practice, but considerable passing was done in the secret workout, Coach Lloyd Jordan announced yesterday, Closed drills are customary preceding Yale games.
Jordan would not comment on the status of several injured players working with the team. It was reported that Joe Conzelman, first team quarterback since Bob Hardy fractured an elbow, was in pads yesterday. Conzelman suffered a leg injury Saturday that was supposed to keep him out of the Yale game.
Nothing is known on the status of returned ends Bob Cochran and Harvey Popell, both presumably out for the season, but Jordan did say the team was in better shape than at any time since the Columbia game.
Cochran has been twice side-lined with the fracture and refracture of a leg bone. He suffered the original injury in preseason practice, and has not seen game action this season. Popell was benched with an ailment described as "over-fatigue."
Besides passing, Jordan sent the squad through a defensive scrimmage against the JV's, playing out of a Yale T-formation. The three varsity units alternated on defense before shifting to pass and tackling practice.
"This probably will be the last scrimmage before the game," Jordan said and pointed out that considerable reviewing has been done at morning meetings.
