Cambridge Police Okay Square Football Rallies

Cheerleaders Schedule Princeton Rally for Evening of Nov. 6

Friday night football rallies--which last year were forced off the Cambridge streets and into the Harvard Yard--will be held in the Square again, it was learned yesterday.

But there will be only one rally this season, on Nov. 6, the night before the Princeton game.

Plans originally called for a rally this Friday night before the Colgate game, but a conflicting Varsity Club dinner forced cancellation. Head cheerleader Lawrence Cohen '54 had arranged for backfield coach Harold "Josh' Williams and backs John Culver and Bon Hardy to speak, but all three will attend the dinner.

Cohen had already received permission from Associate Dean Robert Watson and University Police Chief Matthew Touhey to let the band, cheerleaders and students march through the Square to the traditional spot in front of the Indoor Athletic Building.

Last year, cautious Cambridge police refused the cheerleaders permission, and the Yale rally was held in front of the Widener steps.

No Dartmouth Rally

Cohen said last night that no rally will be held before the Dartmouth game because of a conflicting band concert.

There will probably not be a rally before the Davidson or Brown games, since these come either right before or right after the Princeton game and the cheerleaders don't want to hold rallies two weeks in a row.

Rallies ordinarily start in front of the statue of John Harvard, move across Massachusetts Avenue to the Houses, and finally end up in front of the Blockhouse.
