The Double Disappointers

In 1903, Dartmouth's Indians blanked the Crimson football team, 11 to 0. The defeat was a double disappointment to Cambridge fans--it was a loss to a traditional rival, and it was the first game played in Harvard Stadium.

Today, Dartmouth's in town again. And the Indians are still capable of imposing double despair, despite a series of injuries. But this time, it's the 50th anniversary of the Stadium, and this time, the traditional Green rivals are figured as ton-point underdogs.

Regardless of injuries, odds, and even predictions of wet weather, a definite handicap to a passing team such as Dartmouth, Crimson Coach Lloyd Jordan is restricting any optimism about the outcome of the game.

Four regular starters will be missing from the Big Green lineup. Quarterback Jim Miller, a top-notch passer, is out with an injured leg.

End Dave Thielscher will not start, and if he plays, will be used only sparingly. Thielscher was the Green's top passcatcher last year, snagging a total of 30.

Frank Krel, a sophomore, is out with a knee injury, and will not play. Also missing will be rugged Parker Caswell, a two year letterman tackle.

But Coach Tuss McLaughry's replacements will be no weak sisters. Replacing Miller at the vital quarterback post will be Leo McKenna, a sophomore, who led a losing cause against Colgate last week.

Clark Murphy, a hucky elid who plays well both on offense and defense, will take over for Thielscher. Speedy Jim Donohue, a 165-pounder, will fill in at the left halfback post for Krol, and Jerry Samuelson, a highly-rated defensive player last year, will take over at left tackle for Caswell.

So, despite the odds, despite injuries, and despite the rain, which Jordan describes as "the great leveller of football teams," the visiting Indians just might spoil another birthday party.
