Empty for two years since a tiff over funds between its builder and the University, the Geographic Institute has been selected as the new home of the Mathematics Department.
Professor Garrett Birkhoff, Chairman of the Department, said his staff of 30 has taken over about half of the Institute, with the University still undecided as to who will share the building.
The Mathematics offices left the temporary Van Serg building in June, when the University decided to move all ROTC officers there.
The Geographic Institute, situated on Divinity Avenue between the Semitic Museum and the University Press, was built by Dr. A. Hamilton Rice '98 in 1929, at a cost of $335,000. Rice gave the building to the University, but continued to pay the staff and upkeep costs. When the College dropped geography as a field of concentration. Rice cut off his support and the building was closed in October, 1951.
