The varsity cross country team, hit by the flu, dropped is first meet of the year, 26 to 29, while the Crimson freshman harriers won their fourth straight victory yesterday afternoon against the University of Massachusetts at Franklin Field.
Captain Hal Gerry took first place for the Crimson in 20:29.8 but UMass runners took the next three places. Next Crimson runner was Don French who sprinted to finish fifth ahead of teammates Frank Nahigian and Emil San Sonei. French collapsed at the end of the race.
Influenza weakened the squad considerably in its last home meet. Hubie Maguire, first place finisher last week at Brown, and Al Wills did not even start.
The Yardlings took the first nine places against a week Mass freshman squad to win 15 to 50. Dave McLean won in 15:15 and Captain Bill Morris took second.
