Secretary of Defense Robert A. Lovett will definitely speak at Commencement tomorrow morning, and receive an honorary degree. The CRIMSON reported this unofficially two weeks ago, but confirmation came only last night.
Lovett, who left a banker's' life to take over the Department of Defense was graduated from Yale in 1918. He studied at the Harvard Law School from 1919-20, and took graduate courses in business administration from 1920-21. He began work as a clerk in the National Bank of Commerce in New York City, and later became a partner with Brown Brothers, Harriman, and Co. In the early days of the war he served as special assistant to the secretary of war. Later, he served as a pilot and achieved the rank of Lt. Commander. Lovett is also a member of the board of trustees of the Carneige Foundation for the advancement of teaching.
