Golf Team Downs Tech; Encounters Holy Cross Today

Thoroughly whitewashed by Yale on Saturday, the varsity golf team took out their grudge on a weak M.I.T. squad at the Dedham Country Club yesterday afternoon, winning 6 1/2 to 1/2.

The first two players on the Crimson roster did not play. On Sunday, Dusty Burke, first man, reinjured a trick knee suffered during football season, and may need surgery. Captain Paul Weissman, second man, was unable to attend the match.

So Bill Timpson, regularly third on the ladder, moved up to first position and whipped Bob McDonald of Tech, 3 and 2. Dave Hedberg, in number two slot, topped M.I.T. player Chuck Goodman 3 and 2. Playing third, Mitch Rosenholtz hung up a 5 and 4 win Gordon McCurdy.

Crimson fourth man Jack Brophy came in with a 5 and 4 win over Chuck Kaplain, and George Wheeling, playing fifth, beat Techman Rich Foster by an identical score. In sixth slot, Bill Bridges edged Juan Torres by a 2 and 1 count. M.I.T. gained its only score for the meet when Sandy Rock tied Crimson seventh man Bill Rydell.

Medalist for the afternoon was Wheeling with a 76. He was followed by Hedberg, Rosenholtz, and Brophy with identical scores of 77.

This afternoon, the golfers tee off against a Holy Cross squad at the Dedham course. The starting line up will be the same, except that Weissman will play in number one position, and all others will move down one notch. Rydell will not play. Match time is 2 p.m.

Saturday's match, won 7 to 0 by Yale, took the Crimson team completely by surprise. Main factors in the lop-sided Eli win was the Yale course, one of the finest in the world. The greens, much larger than those at Dedham, caused frequent three-putting among the Crimson players, and the narrow fairways heavily penalized stray shots. The Yale players, familiar with the course, were able to cope with a constant heavy wind that caused the visitors scores to soar.
