Faculty Frowns on Competing In Sports, Outside Activities

Extra-curricular activities as such are not recognized by the college, but considered an integral part of a girl's education. Also, in keeping with the policy of "no competition", organized athletics are not encouraged.

Voluntary discussion groups called "workshops"... In drama, literature, art, dance, social science, music, and science, substitute for activities. Courses are taught under these divisions.

Soft ball, tennis, hiking, cycling, riding, and occasional field hockey games theoretically take the place of athletics. President Burkhardt admits, however, that "exercise at Bennington is below average."
