WILLIAMSTOWN, May 10-A fighting freshman lacrosse team saved an otherwise gloomy day for the Crimson here this afternoon, as the Yardlings walloped the favored Williams squad, 8 to 4. But the Crimson varsity bowed, 10 to 6, in the feature attraction.
It was simply a question of too little teamwork too late in the varsity contest. The story is best revealed by the score sheet: of the six Crimson goals, five were tallied without assistance.
The defense had trouble getting settled, too. Williams poured in four goals before the game was three minutes old. But then the varsity steadied. Moe Baldwin scored the first of his three goals, and Pete Brooke added another to make the count 4 to 2 just before the half. The roof collapsed permanently thereafter.
The Yardling story was a different, and far pleassanter one. coach Bob Pickett's club took good advantage of 24 Williams penalties to grab and hold an early lead. The half-time score was 4 to 2.
The freshmen held off Williams over the last half, while their attack, sparked by Tom Whedon, Tim Anderson, and Jim Dorsey, was counting the goals that assured the victory.
The scoring:
Freshmen-Goals: Palches, Dorsey 2, Whedon 2, Anderson, Foster, Neff, Assists: Anderson, Dorsey, Foster, Neff, Palches.
Varsity-Goals: R. Baldwin 3, Brooke Waring, Yost. Assists: Aiello.
