Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. '38, associate professor of History, soundly whipped leftist author Howard Fast in their debate at Yale last night.
More than 100 members of Yale's Political Union voted in favor of Schlesinger's affirmative argument on the topic: "Resolved: That the U.S. safeguards cultural freedom." Only 19 persons voted for Fast, and 15 were undecided.
Schlesinger, while discussing both "internal" and "external" threats to cultural freedom in the nation, claimed more people have more freedom here than in any other country, but noted that some limits are necessary for this country's self-protection.
