Coach Frank Richart's varsity golf team opens its home season this afternoon with a match against. Boston University at the Dedham Country Club.
Richart terms the squad "one of the strongest in recent years," and predicts that the Terrier golfers should offer little opposition.
There are no really outstanding golfers on the Crimson team, but the strongest feature is depth. All seven of today's starters can turn in cards ranging not more than a few strokes from par figures.
Number one player is Dusty Burke, a senior who has lettered for three seasons. Burke, this year's hockey captain, shoots a consistent 74 to 78 over the hilly, narrow Dedham course, but Richart, who calls him a "top-flight competitor," says he is better in match than in medal play. Main feature of his game is a deadly accuracy from 50 yards on in to the pin. Top man on the ladder for two years, he is working now to groove his long game to a point equalling his finesse with the shorter clubs.
Swimming star Dave Hedberg is playing number two position for the second straight season. Hedberg, a junior, has the consistent type of game that is more dangerous in medal play than match, and he led the Crimson golfers to fifth place out of 16 teams entered in the qualifying rounds of last year's Eastern Intercollegiate Golf Association Championships at Yale.
Captain Paul Weissman, who played first man last year, will play third today. A senior who lettered for two years, he fired a fine 72, the lowest score so far this year, in practice rounds last week. This score is exceptionally good considering that it was made in high winds on a soggy course.
Mitch Rosenholtz, another senior who lettered last season, will start as number four man today. Not quite so good as the three above him, his scores fall usually in the 75 to 80 bracket.
Richart calls senior Carl Timpson, playing fifth man, the player who has the best possibilities on his squad. His swing is the most compact and the best grooved, but a shaky short game keeps his scores up around 78. George Wheeling, a junior, and Jack Brophy, a sophomore, complete the list of today's starters. Both shoot around 80.
Senior John Sears and sophomore Bob Goldman are both capable of breaking into the first seven, as are juniors Bill Rydell, Bill Bridges, and Phil Guarino.
Richart's eyes shine when he discusses his freshman team. Bruce Thurmond led all qualifiers, both varsity and freshmen, with a 74 posted last Friday. Ted Cooney, a baseball player, shot a 76, but will only be available for the Yale match. Other outstanding Yardlings are John Parsons, Pete Malkin, Jim Jones, John Walsh, Mayer Hecht, and Dave Strasslen.
