Contrary to a report in the New York Times last week, President Conant is not the first President of the University to go to a public school. At least six other University Presidents attended public schools for their secondary school education.

Benjamin Fine, Education Editor of the Times, said last week in his article on President Conant's speech concerning private secondary school education that "the report grow from his (President Conant) attendance at Roxbury Latin that he was the first Harvard president to go to a public school," but research revealed that several other past presidents have received public school instruction."

Such notable former presidents as Charles W. Eliot, 21st president of the University, and Increase Mather, sixth president, went to "free schools."
