An additional half million dollars will fall into the lap of the University when the will of Hetty Green Wilks, daughter of female financier Hetty Green, is finally probated, an accounting of the will revealed Wednesday. The University's share, originally estimated at $2,000,000, is now thought to be $2,500,000.
When Miss Green died at the age of 80 a year ago February, her estate was estimated to total $70,000,000. The University's share was 4 140th's or $2,000,000. In the last year additional resources have been discovered, bringing the official size of the estate to $95,000,000.
M.I.T., Yale Also Share
The entire Green estate was divided among charitable institutions such as private schools and the Girl Scouts. M.I.T. and Yale were also mentioned in the legacy. Yale receiving a share half the size of Harvard's.
The will has been filed for probate in New York City courts. Harrison Tweed '07, corporation lawyer, is head of the law firm handling the estate.
Miss Green was apparently a bit of an eccentric. The will disposing of the bulk of the fortune was found by her attorneys with four cakes of soap in a tin cabinet in her New York apartment.
