Smoking and slouching in Yale classrooms must cease, according to a recent ruling by Dean William C. DeVane.
"Smoking has been tolerated in lecture and recitation rooms, students have been allowed to read newspapers during class, and sometimes assume such undignified positions as putting feet on other seats, DeVane wrote in a letter to all instructors and professors. "This must be stopped. I expect you to control your classrooms."
All offenders of the new regulations will be sent to the Dean's Office. Repeated violation may result in loss of credit in the course.
Authorities reported that complaints received from both faculty and students prompted this action. Smoking will still be allowed in seminars which contain a limited number of students.
