Sports Affect School's Rating

Preferential treatment of athletes will now have a definite bearing on the academic rating of a university, according to Ivan J. Geiger of M.I.T. and president of the Eastern College Athletic Conference.

In a speech Monday, Geiger stated that the accrediting agencies in the Northeast and Middle Atlantic states will inquire about policies concerning regulations for admissions, rate of progress expected towards completion of requirements for degrees, class attendance, and eligibility for teams. Special courses for athletes and courses in coaching will also be a factor.

He added that the agencies are considering revaluing colleges more frequently than the present once every 12 years.
