Bar Duties Trifold

Reginald Heber Smith '10 stated yesterday in a speech to the Harvard Students Bar Association that "the minister has only his obligation to God, the doctor has only his obligation to his patient, but the lawyer has obligations to his client, the courts, and the public."

These three obligations are "often in conflict,' 'he said, and pose a serious ethical problem for the lawyer.

Smith, speaking on "Lawyers as Public Spirited Citizens,' 'said that the practice of law is a public service. "Public misconceptions about the law," he added, "often limit the lawyer's opportunities for public service."
