Cambridge University's Clive Parry gave a brief account of the English legal system to a sparse Law Forum audience in Langdell Hall last night.
Parry, visiting professor of Law, and Ezra Ripley Thayer, teaching fellow of Law, explained that the prospective English lawyer receives a classical education which precludes a knowledge of the practical subjects given so much attention in American law schools.
A more intense English public school program and a broader curriculum within the law school, he continued, allow the omission of the four-year college.
Louis Loss, professor of Law, countered by citing the mobility of American law professors, many of whom teach and practice simultaneously, thus avoiding an ivory tower approach to law.
