Army May Start UMT With 600,000 Man Call

Defence officials said Thursday that with Congressional approval the armed forces will start Universal Military Training this fall. The services will begin the program with 60,000 volunteer 18-year-olds who will be put on active duty after six months training.

After the first year, UMT would become compulsory until 800,000 men a year were being inducted for the half year training. After their training the men would be put on the active reserve for seven and a half years. However, the first 60,000 men would serve 18 months active service immediately following their training period.

These men would be paid $75 per month, while the non-volunteers will get $30.
