A sophomore broke into the starting football lineup today for the first time, when Coach Lloyd Jordan announced that fullback John Culver would start the Holy Cross game.
Culver, whose running was one of the bright spots in the Springfield victory, has continued his fine showing all week.
Veteran starter Tom Ossman continued to take signal practice with the first team, although culver worked with the starting eleven during today's offensive scrimmage.
Previously, the 215-pound Iowan had run in all all-sophomore backfield which included Dick Clasby at tailback, John Tulenko at wingback, and Bill Weber at quarterback.
Jordan expressed doubt that this unit would ever start, en masse.
"But," he said, "Clasby and Culver are better than Captain Carroll Lowenstein and Ossman in their present condition," Ossman, however, will probably fill a linebacker's post.
Tackle Bob Stargel's ability and drive, coupled with Arnie Horween's bad shoulder, have elevated Stargel into the starting right tackle position. But, while Horween went both ways, John Hickey and Bob Thompson will replace Stargel on defense.
Bill Healey and Warren Wylie have shared the starting wingback's job so far, but Jordan has named Healey to open against the Cross.
