College upperclassmen will begin doing some of the dirty work in the 11 University dining halls this year for the first time. Under a new experimental plan, much like the one for student porters, the Office of Student Employment is making available positions in the kitchen such as dish washers to students who are willing to do the work.
The new openings were created because of a shortage of adult help in the kitchens. Last week, before the Employment Office could screen enough students for the jobs, the non-student help had to work in extra shifts to keep the serving lines open.
About 100 students are now working in various positions in the dining halls, but only a few of them hold the kitchen jobs. There are still several openings left for these jobs, as well as for other jobs, according to Graham Taylor, Director of Student Employment. There is a particular demand for students willing to work on weekends.
