Two reserve fullbacks and the initial squad cut highlighted yesterday's varsity football practice.

Jerry Blitz and John Culver took turns plowing through the scrub defense. Blitz particularly impressed observers as he showed more driving ability than at any other time this year. He is fast anyhow--he usually finishes first in the squad races--and his return to form may mean that the Crimson attack has a third real fullback, behind starter Tom Ossman and Culver.

Meanwhile, a handful of men were dropped to the junior varsity and still others were cut from the official squad, although they will continue to practice with the varsity.

Lettermen Dick Duback, Humphrey Heidtmann, and Bob Ray, and former--'53--freshman star John Ederer were among those demoted. They worked out, though, with the varsity yesterday, and will continue to do so.

Coach Lloyd Jordan attributed the assignment of the other men to the J.V.'s "because we have an undermanned J.V., and lots of men now playing with the varsity who really need J.V. experience."

Jordan also announced that Wally Flynn, former lineman under ex-coach Dick Harlow, had been retained to help direct the large freshman squad.

The group--nearly 100 strong--has been split into two teams. "But this doesn't mean that a boy on the B squad is definitely out of the running for a position," explained Jordan.

The newly-appointed Flynn will help head freshman coach Bob Margarita and Bill Henry with the A team, while Howie Houston and Charley Law will work with the B unit.
