State Police are counting on the Harvard Bureau of Legal Medicine to turn up a clue in the recent "red scarf" murder at Bowdoin, police headquarters revealed last night.

Since Guy Coolen, ex-husband of the murdered Shirley Coolen, has been exonerated of the crime by a lie detector test, the police have only one suspect left.

Dr. Richard Ford, acting director of the Department of Legal Medicine, was called into the case to check the only clues--a piece of paper with handwriting on it and another article, the identity of which has been kept secret. Ford is also examining the dead girls clothing.

Authorities say they are convinced these articles, found near the murder scene on the Bowdoin campus, can be linked with their suspect. The handwriting is now being matched against his.

Ford would not disclose what he had found, but State Police indicated that a major move would be made within hours.
