A new elementary General Education course in the Social Sciences will be added to next year's curriculum, David E. Owen, professor of History and chairman of the Committee on General Education, announced yesterday.

Tentative plans call for a course taught entirely in sections along the lines of Humanities 3 or for one with two section meetings and one lecture a week. "We haven't worked out the details yet," Owen said, "but it is always desirable to vary our teaching methods."

The new course, Social Sciences 5, is being added to meet the needs of next year's expanding General Education program. Beginning with the Class of '55 all undergraduates will be required to take one General Education course in each of the three fields of study.

In another contemplated faculty move, Theodore Morrison '23, lecturer on English and director of English A, disclosed last night that he was considering asking the faculty to abolish the "Committee on the Use of English by Students," of which he is chairman.

The committee prescribes remedial work for students who chronically use faulty English in their mid-year and final examinations. Morrison said he was doubtful whether a standing faculty committee was necessary to perform this operation which might be accomplished more efficiently by some other means.

Morrison said that no action on the matter would be taken before next fall when he may move for abolition of the committee at a faculty meeting.
