University engineers yesterday elected to break from the Employees Representatives Association and be an independent union. The vote was 41 to break, 27 to stick with the H.U.E.R.A.
Formed last spring, the Association of Operating Engineers petitioned the State Labor Relations Board in February to hold the election. Out of the 72 men eligible to vote, 68 cast ballots.
Peter McHugh, president of the independent group, wasn't sure how the election would come out. There was a similar break petition circulated last spring when the union was formed, but enough signatures could not be obtained.
McHugh attributes the success of their efforts this time to the dissatisfaction of the engineers over last February's contested H.U.E.R.A. election of officers.
