150 Crews Take Openers Against Tech, Dartmouth

Bert Haines' lightweight crews swept the Charles in their 1951 openers Saturday.

The varsity 150s beat M. I. T. and Dartmouth, while the jayvees and freshmen both downed their Tech opponents over the very choppy mile and five-sixteenths course.

In the varsity race, the Crimson jumped to a half-length lead on the opening sprint and increased it to two-lengths by the Massachusetts Avenue bridge with a 28 stroke. They won going away by three lengths in 7:57. Dartmouth was never in the race, and finished four lengths behind Tech.

The jayvees were never headed as they quickly put open water between themselves and M. I. T. and swept to an 8:09.5 five lengths victory, stroking at 26 most of the way.
