Stuffy and the Harbingers

Spring had its semi-official opening in Briggs Cage yesterday afternoon, when the practice nets were shaken out and the soft tatoo of bats against balls filled the air from 1 to 4:30 p.m.

Forty-three candidates for Stuffy McInnis' varsity nine made an appearance on the first day of practice. Above, McInnis talks over prospects with returning veterans (clockwise from left) infielder Tom Cavanaugh, catcher Charlie Walsh, left fielder Bernie Akillian, and center fielder Ed Foynes.

Yesterday's activities were confined to an easy loosening-up of winter kinks, but batting practice should start today.
