The heat was on in Cambridge and adjacent areas yesterday, as fear of Kafauver Committee repercussions forced local bookmakers to put a firm lid on their activities.
Although the Harvard Square area is almost free of large scale bookmaking local runners were proceeding on their travels in an especially cautious manner. Reliable sources revealed that some had even suspended activities, temporarily.
Meanwhile, former assistant attorney general George Fingold, yesterday criticized by President of the Cambridge Civic Association James F. Mahan, was waiting to be asked to head the Massachusetts crime commission being discussed at the State House. Fingold stated that he believed that it was his duty to take over the job "if asked by the right people."
