Yale President A. Whitney Griswold was guilty of making "insulting, sarcastic, evasive statements" to Derby Day rioters Tuesday night, a Yale Daily News editorial charged Wednesday.
According to a story which appeared on the front page of the same issue, Griswold was called out of his home to address the 2,000-man mob.
In answer to shouted questions about the fate of Derby Day, Griswold answered: "There's a big question hanging over this University. Can we continue as a private university? Compared to this, the question of Derby Day is a midget."
The News attacked Griswold editorially for his refusal to discuss the Derby Day issue extemporaneously. "By his contempt for an assemblage . . . of his students," said the News, "he succeeded in alienating a good portion of the undergraduate body."
Griswold had responded to noisy demands for "the return of Derby Day" by outlining Yale's current difficulties. His time nowadays, he said, was entirely devoted to settling the many problems forced on Yale by the current emergency.
