In testimony yesterday against a proposed bill outlawing the Communist Party in Massachusetts, Reverend L. Earle Jackson, Secretary of the Massachusetts Council of Churches, said that such a petition would forbid colleges even to teach the meaning of communism.

"Any respectable college," he added, "should explain what communism is, because that knowledge is necessary for understanding how the ideology should be combatted."

Howard S. Whiteside, counsel for the American Veterans Committee, predicted that teachers of "political philosophy and economic politics in our colleges would be liable for prosecution under this bill."

Yesterday's session ended committee hearings on the bill. They were in marked contrast to Wednesday's hearings which got out of control several times. The committee will not report on the bill until next week.
