A stiff fight against lowering the draft age to 18 years and extending the length of service appeared certain in both the Senate and House of Representatives.
Senator Morse (R-Ore.) said yesterday that he would "make a real fight on the Senate floor" against certain provisions of the bill which the Armed Services Committee approved. He objected to the use of the Congress as a rubber stamp for Pentagon proposals.
Morse said he would propose amendments to reduce the present draft age of 19 by only six months instead of the proposed year.
The Senator lost his fight within the committee on each of these points, but he voted for the bill anyway. He said that he would continue the fight on the floor as he expects more support there.
