The current athletic scholarship controversy has finally spread to the campus of the University of Chicago.

An article in the December issue of the Chicago alumni magazine stated that an alumnus had given "$3,000 to provide scholarships for boys of high academic standing who would be interested in participating in varsity athletics."

The article specifically named Kenyon Stapely, a third-year college student, as the first to "enjoy the generosity of this alumnus." Stapely, who distinguished himself on the JV track team last year, was thinking of leaving the University, but the scholarship enabled him to remain.

Commenting on this article, the Chairman of the Scholarship Committee emphasized the fact that the students who received these grants must come up to the same standards as all other scholarship recipients.
