Shapley Reports New Galaxies Discovered

At a meeting of the National Academy of Sciences recently, Dr. Harlow Shapley, professor of Practical Astronomy, reported the discovery of a new window in the Milky Way. The window is slightly obscured by dust clouds Shapley reported, through which one can "see" 100 new galaxies.

The clues came from observing variable stars. Photographs showing the window were taken at the South African Harvard station and analyzed and studied at the Harvard Observatory. From this discovery, Shapley stated that more can be determined about the position of the sun and the earth in relation to the Gigantic Pinwheel.

Some stars within these galaxies are a billion times the volume of the sun.
